Re: [narcolepsy] (Narcolepsy) Developed Narcolepsy and Now What?
Hi Gregory. I'm so sorry to hear that you have been found unfit for duty. I have a son who has been in the Air Force for 13 yrs and I can't imagine how hard it would be on his family if he were to suddenly be diagnosed with N.
While I don't have the answers you are looking for, I feel someone on this list will be able to give you advise. Would you please tell us why you were given 0% disability? Seems to me you would certainly be given disability payments since you were diagnosed and then found unable to do the work assigned to you. Knowing that you have been treated in such a manner doesn't make me feel very good about the Army. It isn't as if you had just inlisted for the first time. You have given your life to serve. But you know all of this. Sorry for rambling.
I'm sure everyone else would like to know why you were not given disability. As a civilian, you can apply for Social Security Disability.

sorry to hear about the non disabiility but that just doesn't sound right.
You might try looking at the Nolo Press book on applying for disability.
You can find it at the library and even if it isnt this year's last year's
or the year before will still give you a start on where to begin. And get a
lawyer. I thought that was ridiculous at first but it's the way to go and
it goes a lot faster right from the beginning with one.
Dear Greg,
Check out the archives on this group. There have been numerous postings that have addressed many of your concerns. As one who was given a medical discharge from the Air Force back in 1965, I understand your concerns and fears. Unfortunately, the anguish of narcolepsy never goes away; but there are numerous ways to cope and medical breakthroughs or improvements continue to be achieved. Recent identification of hypocretin deficiency in the cerebralspinal fluid of narcolepics offers new avenues of treatment that may prove to offer the "cure" that presently does not exist.
For now, you need to be involved with an physician experienced in the treatment of narcolepsy. Usually this is a neurologist connected to a certified sleep center. A list of those is available at: www.aasmnet.org/listing.htm
