RE: [narcolepsy] Free Drugs? I hope not.
2008-05-31 20:28:38Why is it that every time I read these posts, I see someone Bashing the very system that provides us our new and experimental drugs. I Hope to GOD the government doesn't step in and try and control prescription drug prices. That would be the end of new drugs for all of us.
How can people say that we should have nationally managed health care? Don't they understand the simple fact that companies WILL NOT spend extremely high risk money on drug research unless they can promise investors a high rate of return on the investment. This is why prescription drugs seem expensive to us. However, we would not have drugs like provigil, GHB, Aleeve, etc... if a research company told a potential investor, "If you invest 10 Million dollars with us, In 5 years you'll get back 14 Million. by the way, Its very risky, even if the drug works the FDA might not approve it, and possibly another company is working on the same thing, I'd say the odds of you getting your 10,000,000 back is about 1 in 30."
Another problem is the fact that the gov't only allows short patents on drugs. So your typical researching drug company invests years working on a drug, and a few years after the release you get the Generics. Who didn't have to spend any research money, yet can undercut the brand name drug after the patent expires. So really our government forces the research companies to charge huge amounts for their new drug during the patent period. They only have a few years to recoup ALL the expenses of the years or research, pay their investors, buy new research equipment before a generic copycat comes in and reaps the benefits of years of research and risk.
The drug companies know they can only sell expensive drugs to people with A. money or B. insurance. Most drug companies including the company which makes Provigil have programs to provide low cost drugs to people who qualify. I'm sure someone can remember the name of that company and post it on the list. The website has a direct link to people who can't afford Provigil.
