Hi all,
My name is Kerry, and I was finally diagnosed with narcolepsy early
last year. One earlier GP had suggested that it was a possibility
about a year earlier again, but then came the wonderful period of
trying to get other doctors to take it seriously. I got told I was
just high on the scale of people who got sleepy in the afternoon, which
was a normal experience. I did point out that I got sleepy in the
morning the evening, and all the times in between, but this was
apparently umimportant. It's hard not to know there is something wrong
however when you are ready to go back to bed two hours after you get up
in the morning, and coffee makes a nice bedtime drink!
I think it must be very hard for other people to understand the
frustration of how it feels to fall asleep regardless of whether you
want to or not, and whether or not you had a good night sleep the night
before, and to have it happen all the time.
Eventually they sent me to get a sleep test and discovered the truth.
The best thing about this was it allowed me to finally get some
medication. This was a big help as I was at Universtiy at the time, and
finding it increasingly hard to manage. I'm on dex-amphetamine now, and
I couldn't believe the difference it made straight away, I actually
read two books the first weekend I was on them, because I could.
It felt like cotton wool stuffing had been removed from my brain all of
a sudden. My biggest ongoing problem is still public transport, I fall
asleep in any vehicle, really fast, so driving will probably be off
limits for me, even on medication.
I am hoping to try provigil next year when it becomes available for
Australia. I also hope this new gene discovery has some benefits down
the track.
I have to say that the biggest relief throughout this whole experience
had to be putting a name to it, and realising I did have a legitimate
problem, and I wasn't just a lazy person. I could stop beating up on
myself. It's no less annoying to be watching a tv show, which I am
enjoying only to wake up and discover it half way through the next
show. I hate that!!
Does anyone here also suffer the other fun stuff that goes along with
Narcolepsy, the cataplexy, hypnagogic hallucinations and paralysis? I
guess I got the bonus prize cause I have them all in varying degrees.
I actually went to the doctor first in relation to the cataplexy, when
i kept spilling my coffee, when I laughed.
It's great to be able to talk to other people who have been down this
road too. Looking forward to hearing more from you all.
Kerry Haywood
